Island of Foam – FAQs
Useful information about Island of Foam, presented by Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture and Stephanie Luening.
What are the event timings?
- 2pm Foam release one (expect 1 hour foam build up and then when invited there is the opportunity to play in the foam)
- 4pm Foam release two (expect 1 hour foam build up and then when invited there is the opportunity to play in the foam)
What can I expect?
In the first hour we’ll stand behind a roped off area and see the foam released onto Centenary Square and watch artist Stephanie Luning’s vision appear before our eyes in this space. It’s a mesmerising and unique experience. When Stephanie is happy with the finished foam artwork, the Island of Foam team and Bradford2025 volunteers will remove the rope and if you wish you can touch the foam.
See photos from previous foam releases on Stephanie Luning’s page here.
What is the foam made of?
It’s a mixture of 94% water, 5% food colouring and 1% soap.
Will the coloured foam stain my hands and body?
If you get coloured foam on your body, wash your hands thoroughly 3-4 times with soap. Wash your clothes as you would usually to remove any colour residue.
What if I get foam in my eye?
Wash eyes in cold water and visit the event first aid team.
What should I wear?
If you want to play in the foam, please wear clothes and footwear you don’t mind getting coloured.
Please watch out with Suede leather shoes or items.
Can children play in the foam unsupervised?
We have a robust lost child policy in place, but adults must be responsible for their child and supervise them throughout this event.
Can I clean off at Centenary Square?
We will have a water station at the event where you can wash your hands and exposed skin. Please ensure you do this if entering the Mirror Pool.
Shall I bring a towel?
A towel is a good idea for drying off after washing foam off with water.
What if I don’t want to touch the foam?
When the rope is removed, do not enter the foam area.
Can the weather affect the foam releases?
Foam releases can happen in light rain, but not in heavy rain due to the composition of foam.
The foam will be lifted in wind and spread around the trees and buildings around Centenary Square and is not damaging or harmful.
How will you clean up after the event?
We will bring city cleaners into Centenary Square after the event for a full clear up.
Will the foam stain Bradford’s buildings?
Any residue colour on buildings will disappear within a few weeks of British weather.
Can I bring a dog/ pet with me?
This will be a busy event, so we recommend you don’t bring dog/ pets with you.
Will there be toilet facilities?
Yes, the toilets at City Park will be open for this event.
