Draw memories with Phoebe Boswell

Artist Phoebe Boswell invites us to draw our memories – part of DRAW! supported by David Hockney.

Published: November 27, 2025

DRAW! supported by David Hockney is a nationwide project to get everyone drawing.

For the final month of DRAW! in December, artist Phoebe Boswell is asking us to get reflective and draw our memories.

Boswell’s paintings, drawings, installations, and film & video works have been exhibited at galleries across the UK including Dulwich Picture Gallery, London and Kettles Yard, Cambridge. Her work is held in collections widely, including The British Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, RISD, the British Film Institute’s National Archive and the UK Government Art Collection. She was born in Nairobi, Kenya, and lives and works in London.

What a pleasure to be the final artist for DRAW!, a project which has inspired so many people to create. The theme I’ve chosen, “memories”, invites participants to reflect on their pasts, using drawing to remind us of joyous moments in our lives, or perhaps as a way of processing, healing, or repair, or even as a point of departure where looking back might encourage an exploration of alternative futures. Or we could think of memory as entirely process-based, where you just set yourself some time to let your pencil go for a journey, and the marks on the page become the memory-making.

Drawing is intimate, it is a powerful way to bring stories and feelings to life, allowing us to release or visualise what may otherwise be unseen.
