Want to know more? Our wonderful team of Wild Uplands Volunteers will be available to chat to at weekends from June to September – and while visiting Wild Uplands, why not check out Earth & Sky: a free audio experience developed by Bradford 2025 and Opera North.

The artists

Shanaz Gulzar, Creative Director of Bradford 2025 and the curator of Wild Uplands, has invited four leading artists – Monira Al QadiriMeherunnisa Asad with Studio LélVanessa da Silva and Steve Messam – to create new artworks for Penistone Hill. Their artworks take inspiration both from this natural landscape and from our shared industrial heritage.

Getting there

There are a number of entrances to the country park. The entrances nearest the artworks are:

It is approximately 10 minutes’ walk from the centre of Haworth to the Dimples Lane entrance.

If you are travelling by car, the nearest car park is off Moorside Road. There are also a number of paid car parks in Haworth town centre.

Plan your visit using our sustainable travel planner below.

Getting around

The Wild Uplands artworks are located in different parts of the Penistone Hill Country Park. All can be viewed and found from the main footpaths. We encourage you to enjoy the epic Penistone Hill landscape at your leisure and make your own route around the park to find the artworks. We estimate it will take 40-60 mins to walk around all of them, not including Earth & Sky. Look out for the arrows on site to help guide you.

A Welcome Board featuring map locations and info about the artworks can be found at the two main entrances to Penistone Hill, the car park off Moorside Lane and Dimples Lane.

Wild Uplands Digital

In June discover Wild Uplands Digital: an online exhibition site where you can explore the artworks digitally. With in-depth interviews with the Wild Uplands and Earth & Sky artists and those who care for the Penistone Hill landscape, experience Wild Uplands from your own home. Check back this page at the end of June for updates.

Looking after the landscape

Please help us look after Penistone Hill. Stick to the footpaths and avoid disturbing or walking over the heather moorland. Please take any litter away with you.

Toilets

There are no toilets available at Penistone Hill. The nearest public toilets can be found at Bronte Parsonage Museum, approx. a 10 min walk from the southern entrance to Penistone Hill, off Dimples Lane.

Wheelchair accessibility

Penistone Hill Country Park is not wheelchair accessible and due to uneven terrain and some inclines may not be accessible for those with limited mobility. For those unable to take part in-person, Wild Uplands Digital is an online exhibition where you can discover the artworks and more from home. Wild Uplands Digital will be launched end June 2025. Check back on this page for updates.

Uneven surface

Penistone Hill Country Park is a former quarry. Due to this the terrain is rugged and rocky, with uneven surfaces in places. Please take care when visiting. We advise wearing sturdy footwear and sticking to the footpaths. Due to this uneven terrain it is not suitable for pushchairs.

Visual Story

For those visiting in person, a Wild Uplands Visual Story including detailed photos of the site, paths, entrances and information to help you better plan a visit will be available from this page from end May 2025.
