Our closing event Brighter Still takes place on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 December. This popular event is sold out and there is no box office at the event – please don’t travel to the site without a ticket.

Our Goal

Throughout Bradford’s year as UK City of Culture our ambition was to set a new standard for sustainability in cultural events – one that creates lasting change in the city and the cultural sector.

To achieve this, we developed a sustainability framework for Bradford 2025 aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and existing sustainability strategies in Bradford District. Our approach focused on ten key areas, ensuring our work benefits both the planet and our communities.

We worked in partnership with SAIL, a non-profit supporting sustainability in the creative industries, to make sure that every aspect of Bradford 2025 was as environmentally responsible as possible.

Read some of our sustainability case studies below and find out how we embedded sustainable thinking throughout Bradford’s year as UK City of Culture 2025.

Sustainability stories

Discover just a few of the ways we embedded sustainability in our year as UK City of Culture.

The Beacon hybrid generator

Typically for live events that don’t have a way to connect to the national grid, diesel generators are used to provide electricity. These generators burn fuel even when they’re not providing electricity which generates Carbon Dioxide emissions.

The hybrid generator for The Beacon – a Hussh Pod HV150 generator, built by Nottinghamshire based Power Saving Solutions – instead combined a small diesel generator with a large 150kWh battery.

This makes the generator far more efficient, and converts more of the available fuel into electricity, reducing the overall carbon dioxide emissions and saving fuel in the process.

Rather than using standard diesel fuel for the generator, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) from used cooking oil was used instead, offering up to 90% carbon emission savings vs standard diesel.

Sustainable audience travel

Throughout 2025 we encouraged visitors to Bradford from across the UK and beyond. Working alongside You.Smart.Thing. some of our key successes included:

  • The creation of personalised, automated travel plans for Bradford 2025 ticket bookers, generating door to door journey plans with carbon emissions calculated for every journey type.
  • Over 60% of ticket bookers checking their travel plan before an event.
  • Over 4,000 travel plans generated for our opening event RISE.

See more on the You.Smart.Thing. blog.

Towards a circular economy

Some of the ways that we did this included:

  • Wooden Frames from Life Class in Loading Bay sent to the Bradford Movie Makers, the oldest surviving amateur filming clubs in the world.
  • Large black wool cloth from The Railway Children was reused in REPLAY.
  • 14 x Corrugated Roof sheets donated by Leeds Playhouse to SAIL, borrowed from the SAIL Resource Hub for a production in Loading Bay which were then given back to SAIL, and then donated onto a person renovating their shed!
  • Wooden crates used for shipping Wild Uplands artworks were utilised for an exhibition in Leeds, showcasing artwork from disabled artists.

10 Key Sustainability Themes

1. Energy

We reduced our energy demand and used renewable sources wherever possible.

  • Our offices ran on 100% renewable electricity through Ecotricity, with no gas heating.
  • Loading Bay was refitted to eliminate gas use, producing zero Scope 1 emissions.
  • We invested in three Instagrid 2.1kWh batteries to power events, reducing reliance on petrol and diesel generators.
  • No event used regular diesel generators. Instead, we used Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) – a cleaner alternative.
  • We purchased a 150kWh battery to power The Beacon.
2. Travel & Transport

We made it easier for people to choose sustainable transport – whether they were performers, crew, or audiences.

  • Bradford 2025 sponsor First Bus provided support to enable UK City of Culture volunteers to travel to venues and events to assist visitors.
  • Carbon emissions generated from flights taken were offset through the restoration of peatland with the Yorkshire Peat Partnership – a local biodiversity project.
  • We utilised the You.Smart.Thing sustainable travel tool, allowing visitors to plan journeys with public transport and low-carbon options.
  • Prioritised venues with strong public transport links and ensured events finished in time for people to travel by bus or train.
3. Waste & Materials

We designed out waste and championed reuse across all aspects of production.

  • Our offices were fitted out with second-hand furniture and repurposed materials – including from Coventry 2021 City of Culture.
  • We partnered with SAIL on the Resource Hub – a platform based in Shipley to store, share and reuse materials.
  • Worked with vendors to limit single-use plastic and ensure food packaging is reusable or compostable.
4. Supply Chain

We keept our supply chain as local, ethical, and low-carbon as possible.

  • Majority of suppliers based in the region, reducing transport emissions.
  • Carbon Accounting training for suppliers in partnership with RTC North, creating a legacy of more sustainable businesses beyond 2025.
  • Food vendors required to complete sustainability checklists, covering sourcing, welfare, and waste reduction.
  • We considered the environmental and social impact of our procurement decisions, prioritising ethical, sustainable and socially responsible suppliers.
5. People & Partnerships

Sustainability is a team effort. We equipped staff, volunteers, and cultural partners with the knowledge to make a difference.

  • SAIL appointed as Sustainability Partner, providing expertise and resources.
  • Carbon literacy training for all Bradford 2025 staff.
  • Sustainability training for volunteers, developed by SAIL.
  • Drop-in sustainability sessions for GiveBradford Creative Communities Fund recipients.
6. Representation

Sustainability isn’t just about the planet – it’s about people, equity, and inclusion. We ensured diverse voices were heard and that our events were accessible and affordable.

  • New Focus Young Creatives – supporting emerging talent.
  • Creative Health initiatives – exploring the role of art in wellbeing.
  • Activity in all 30 wards – ensuring every neighbourhood can engage with Bradford 2025.
7. Programme

We brought environmental issues to life through art, events, and experiences.

Bradford 2025 projects with a sustainability focus include:

  • The Beacon
  • Bradford on Foot
  • Bradford Selection Box
  • Memories of the Future
  • PLAY
  • Jungle Book Reimagined by Akram Khan Company – exploring climate change through Mowgli’s journey
  • Wild Uplands – an outdoor gallery set on the moors above Haworth, reconnecting visitors with nature
8. Biodiversity & Nature

We used green spaces responsibly and supported conservation efforts.

  • Biodiversity impact assessments integrated into programme planning.
  • Used green spaces as event venues (e.g. Lister Park) while ensuring environmental protection.
  • Funding local peatland restoration projects, working with Yorkshire Peat Partnership.
9. Measurement & Reporting

We tracked, evaluated, and shared our impact transparently.

  • To our knowledge, we are the first UK City of Culture to track our Carbon Footprint using the greenhouse gas protocol corporate standard – we tracked our carbon impact across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 in the most robust way possible.
  • Developed a greenhouse gas protocol-aligned reporting methodology.
  • Carbon calculator integrated into event production, providing live carbon footprint data.
10. Legacy

We’re not just making 2025 sustainable – we’re setting the foundations for a greener future in Bradford’s cultural sector.

  • Development of toolkits and guides for cultural organisations, starting with a sustainability checklist for partners.
  • Partnering with University of Leeds & University of Bradford to establish an open data repository for emissions tracking.
  • Supporting student research on sustainability in culture, including The Beacon touring venue.

We are committed to setting a new benchmark for sustainable cultural events.

By bringing together innovation, collaboration, and community action, our aim has been to leave a lasting environmental and social impact beyond Bradford’s year as UK City of Culture 2025.
