CHANNELS is collection of sound-art pieces created by collaborative duo Turbynes, inspired by three human-made bodies of water across Bradford District.

Made in response to each site, CHANNELS features voices, field recordings and original music.  Audiences will be able to tune into stories, soundscapes and musings – an invitation to slow down, listen and enjoy these unique places.

CHANNELS will run throughout the Summer of 2025 with benches and their matching audio works located at Bingley Five Rise Lock, Chellow Dean Reservoir, and the Mirror Pool in City Park. The audio works will be accessible via QR codes, located next to the benches. Each QR code needs to be scanned by a smartphone or tablet, and will lead to webpages with more information on the inspiration behind the benches and the sound pieces.

Turbynes have been working with the three locations over recent months, immersing themselves in the process of sound recording (including ambisonic and hydrophonic), creative writing, music making, historical research, interviews, and collaborations with a variety of other local artists. The resulting artworks are a diverse collection of atmospheric listening experiences.

"CHANNELS is truly site responsive, led by the stories, histories and landscapes of each place. As we’ve worked at these three ‘blue spaces’, the seasons, wildlife and visitors have changed. Whether it’s going for a dip with a wild swimmer at Chellow Dean, chatting with the guardians of the Mirror Pool, or chugging along the Leeds-Liverpool canal with a boater, it’s been fascinating to explore why we’re all drawn to water.

"The works we’ve made evoke the diverse nature of the places-some of the audio feels like a conversation, some more dreamy. Expect poignant stories, haunting ballads, and a touch of eco-futurism.

"At this time of climate emergency, it felt important to explore stories of water - we’ve shaped these places and they continue to shape us in return.
"CHANNELS offers moments of reflection and respite inviting you to an aural soundscape, tuning into the melodies of each location the benches are set in.

This is one of many projects showcasing the depth and breadth of the imagination and creativity of the exceptional talent that calls Bradford home and I am delighted that audiences can experience this as part of the year."
