Located at MAPA, the colourful sculpture honours the centre’s role as a community hub, while inviting reflection on balance, identity, and shared belonging. The five-tiered, multicoloured artwork is the latest piece by award-winning sculptor Sam Shendi, whose use of form and colour has brought international acclaim.

Honouring the unique history of MAPA, formerly the Margaret McMillan Adventure Playground, and its role in shaping generations of children in the city, Shendi’s sculpture draws direct inspiration from the playground’s origins, and from the simple childhood toys that teach balance, shape, and coordination.

Now a thriving youth and community centre, MAPA continues to be a space where young people can empower themselves and each other through creativity, collaboration, and social action. The sculpture stands as a visual celebration of that mission—honouring generations of Bradford families who’ve grown up through its doors.

The unveiling of Balancing Acts is a key moment in Bradford 2025’s PLAY programme, which is enhancing the existing play provision in Bradford and supporting the work already in place by Play Bradford.

Shendi's sculpture is playful, welcoming, and deeply rooted in the community spirit that MAPA was built on. It tells a story of generations growing up in this space, learning balance in life, though joy and coming together.
I’m pleased to have been chosen to be part of Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture and have been blown away by how MAPA who through their history, staff and volunteers, have believed in the community since the 1970s. Having my work here will act as a reminder of the people who started MAPA and celebrate the people who continue that work today. Balancing Acts is a totem for the future generations to understand the value of their community.
“I welcome the installation of Sam Shendi's Balancing Acts, a work that highlights MAPA’s dedication to creativity and inclusivity. Its design encourages engagement and conversation, making art accessible to people of all ages in Bradford and the wider community.
