Centenary Square
Island of Foam: Version #40
Stephanie Lüning
Centenary Square was filled with multicoloured foam to celebrate National Play Day.
Centenary Square was like you never saw it before – transformed by mountains of Technicolor foam.
Island of Foam: Version #40 was the spectacular creation of German artist Stephanie Lüning, whose large scale painting actions change how we look at familiar public spaces. On 6 August 2025, she flooded Centenary Square with foam, creating a dynamic art installation in real time as a huge kaleidoscope of colour swept across the square.
People could watch the transformation from the safety of the pavement across from City Hall – and when it completed, they were invited to jump right in. Island of Foam: Version #40 took place on Playday, the UK’s national day for play.
