Stephanie Lüning

Celebrate Playday, the national day for play, in City Park. Families of all ages can join in this monumental explosion of multicoloured foam…

Event Details
Date 6 Aug 2025
Times 2pm & 4pm
Location Centenary Square
Ages Everyone is welcome

Come and see Centenary Square as you’ve never seen it before – transformed by mountains of Technicolor foam.

Take part in German artist Stephanie Lüning's dynamic art installation.

Island of Foam: Version #40 is the spectacular creation of German artist Stephanie Lüning, whose large scale painting actions change how we look at familiar public spaces. At 2pm and 4pm on 6 August, she’ll be flooding Centenary Square with foam, creating a dynamic art installation in real time as a huge kaleidoscope of colour sweeps across the square.

You can watch the transformation from the safety of the pavement across from City Hall – and when it’s complete, you can jump right in. Island of Foam: Version #40 takes place on Playday, the UK’s national day for play, and when the artwork is complete, Lüning will invite us to dive into the foam. Bring a camera – and maybe a towel…
