Global Dresses of the World
Intercultured Festival
Women-only fashion show celebrating the rich cultural heritage of textiles.
Presented by Intercultured Festival, this women-only event celebrated the rich, often overlooked heritage of textiles.
Due to global conflicts, a variety of traditions and cultural norms associated with countries that are touched by war are at risk of dying out. This includes the heritage of clothes and jewellery, which are an important part of global communities who rely on the textile trade for a living. Traditionally, such skills were passed down from generation to generation, but in the UK today most garments are embroidered by machine and bought from factories or suppliers. However, many such communities are displaced and adopt other members, passing on these latent heritage skills.
Global Dresses of the World was a small cultural fashion show, showcasing the cultural attire of multicultural women and children from across the globe. Participants talked about the significance of their garments and shared a short story about their historical and cultural context. The women were dressed with jewellery to match, with the traditional patterning of Mehndi, accompanied by traditional scarves.
This event was part of Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture, and is presented by an organisation involved in Bradford 2025’s Elevate programme, which aims to strengthen, sustain and increase the agility of Bradford’s heritage sector.
