Roots

Roots is a bold and expressive new work from street artist Peachzz that celebrates community spirit. Inspired by and located on Bradford’s MAPA Cultural Arts Centre, it aims to captures the essence of unity within the local community, and to reflect the diverse voices and shared experiences that define MAPA’s collective identity.

Roots is part of BD: Walls, a collection of new street art commissioned by Bradford 2025 for walls across Bradford District – paying vibrant tribute to our heritage while celebrating our dynamic street art culture.

‘The design of the wall at MAPA was inspired by the history and roots of the community centre, and I am honoured to have had the opportunity to capture its essence.

The history of MAPA is deeply intertwined with music, art, black history and human connection. It became clear during our research that the late Mikey Roots, a revered local musician, community leader and businessman known for his leadership in various community groups, including a Boy Scouts club with its own Rastafari-coloured necktie, and who inspired many local bands and young people, deserved to be celebrated.

This mural honours Mikey, a figure of immense respect, by depicting him as a representative of the MAPA community. The artwork also features Newby Square flats, speakers, pool balls, paintbrushes and a vibrant scene from Bradfords Peoples Day. These elements capture a snapshot of a few moments of MAPA’s rich history.’

Peachzz found street art in the UK’s abandoned industries, allowing her to splash paint over forgotten walls. Her work typically looks at nature and life, contrasting with the concrete structures of urban spaces. She also has a keen interest in storytelling and loves creating pieces that connect with people and the areas in which they reside. Peachzz has travelled with her work all over Europe and has painted as far afield as the USA, Colombia and Mexico.

Peachzz’ style is expressive with hints of realism, all while experimenting with a bold colour palette. For Roots, she was assisted by Bradford based, Red Dezign and Trik, a Sheffield-based street artist who has created murals across the city. Trik’s has been actively involved in the local street art scene for many years and brings his graffiti lettering style into the mix for this unique wall.
