Welcome to Elmet

The empty stage.

The musicians arrive and take their places on the upper level.

The actors introduce us to their characters. The central character is Danny, and this story is told from his perspective.

LJ becomes Danny and takes us back in time to tell us of their happy childhood in Yorkshire, living in a copse with sister Cathy, and Daddy who is a cage fighter. They move tree stumps, battered chairs and an old tree stump to create their home.

LJ becomes Danny and takes us back in time to tell us of their happy childhood in Yorkshire, living in a copse with sister Cathy, and Daddy who is a cage fighter. They move tree stumps, battered chairs and an old tree stump to create their home.

Danny tells us about Mr Coxswain who was not a nice man. He didn’t pay his debts, so Daddy made him suffer.

Danny and Cathy used to live with Granny Morley until she died. That’s when they moved to the copse with Daddy.

Mr Price owns the land they’re living on. He and his son Charlie are angry men. Daddy tells Cathy and Danny that they’ll make life difficult for them all.

Daddy gets help from his friends; Ewart and Martha – The Royces. Daddy talks to them about a plan to bring Price down a peg or two. They all agree.

Tom, the actor, tell us that while his character, Charlie Price, doesn’t survive in the play, he knew about tragedy – that here Ewart, Martha and Daddy are hopeful that they can change their future, but Charlie knows they won’t.

Danny introduces us to Vivien, Daddy’s friend. Cathy and Danny used to go there every week when Daddy was away fighting. Danny admits to liking the comfort.

Vivien sings Seventeen by Sharon Van Etten as Cathy and Danny dance.

They talk about their mother and a memory of Mr Price invades as he tells them how he’d wanted to marry her, but she chose a different path and ran off with Daddy.

Spring comes and the fight against Price begins. Ewart speaks to some of the men about what an unfair landlord Price is. They plan a rent strike.
Daddy worries that there will be punishments.

Price goes to the copse when he knows Daddy is away. He tells Danny that he’ll give him the land if the rent strike is called off, and if Daddy fights for Price again.

Danny, from the present, tells us about Cathy’s death and her last words.

Cathy stands at the back with a shotgun.

Lights flare brightly and go to black.

INTERVAL

Sean, one of the actors, is setting up an overhead projector.

Jen, the actor playing Cathy, talks to us about Charlotte Church who was a young singer in the 1980s.

She shows some slides that are projected onto the back wall of Charlotte. She was voted ‘Rear of the Year’ at 16.

Sean speaks Charlotte’s words from the Levison Inquiry into the Culture, Practices and Ethics of the UK press.

As Cathy, she asks Danny if he remembers seeing a woman down by the canal, and seeing a man in the shadows. She also tells us about a student who was found dead. She asks Daddy to find the man in the shadows.

Jen talks about the countless women killed or assaulted.

Back into the story.. Danny goes to Vivien’s who is getting ready to go out. Danny goes upstairs and touches her dress and underwear.

He secretly watches her putting on her make up.

Vivien tells Danny she’s worried about Daddy fighting the unknown man. She asks Danny to stop the fight.

Danny sees Daddy’s opponent and describes him as a dancing bear. Cathy runs off.

The fight is vicious, but Daddy wins, meaning the land they live on is now theirs. Danny looks for Cathy.

Charlie has found Cathy and tries to force himself on her, but she gets the upper hand and chokes him to death.

Daddy is blamed for Charlie’s death. Mr Price plans vengeance.

Cathy and Danny look for Daddy. They go to Ewart and Martha’s house. They tell them that Daddy stole all the rent strike money.

Cathy confesses that she killed Charlie, but no one believes her.

Danny visits Vivien, but she won’t let him in.

Bright lights flare and take us to the memory of Cathy and Danny being taken to see Mr Price.

Their home has been destroyed and Mr Price is covered in (fake) blood, carrying a knife.

Daddy is brought in, represented by a microphone on a stand. Price asks for a confession.

Cathy confesses. She’s taken away.

Price kills Daddy. (We don’t see this).

Cathy returns, covered in (fake) blood carrying a shotgun.

She tells Danny to run. Everyone leaves and there are some explosions and loud noises.

Danny is alone and Vivien arrives.

Danny leaves to search for Cathy, taking lifts with lorry drivers.

Vivien reflects on wishing she’d been able to tell Danny that Cathy had escaped.

The other actors join her.

A final song brings us to the end, and a blackout.
