Bradford City Stadium Fire – 40th Anniversary Activity Pack
Bring local history to your learners as we mark the 40th anniversary of the tragic Bradford City stadium fire.
This pack includes resources and activities designed to help your learners understand the events of 11 May 1985. Through these activities, they will explore the importance of remembrance and take part in designing a memorial football shirt and scarf.
In the Engage section, you’ll find a framework to help you facilitate discussions about the fire and its impact, building on learners’ existing knowledge and helping them to understand the story in more detail.
In Make, Create and Do, you’ll find templates to help learners create their own memorial shirt and football scarf to remember the 56 people killed in the disaster. The activity prompts them to think about the significance of colours and symbols in memorials.
In Now Explore, you’ll find a Fact Sheet with a more detailed account of the fire which covers what happened, the causes, and the longer-term impact. There are also extracts from The 56, an award-winning play by Gemma Wilson and Matt Woodhead for LUNG, which features first-hand accounts from those who were there.
Suitability
Upper Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 learners (9-14 year olds)
Please note that some of the resources featured in Now Explore contain quite harrowing accounts of the disaster, including deaths and serious injuries. Check the suitability of these resources for your learners before using them, or select the most appropriate extracts for your group.
