Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture is supporting a new generation of leaders to support the development of Bradford’s heritage sector and lead an array of free events during Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture, running from 12 to 21 September 2025.

The group, working under the banner of Elevate, is made up of 11 independent organisations and creatives and part of an ambitious year-round skills development programme made possible by funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Elevate programme has been created to strengthen and support Bradford’s growing heritage sector, ensuring it is more confident, collaborative and inclusive. The cohort reflects a bold and expanded definition of heritage, one that includes not just buildings and archives, but lived experiences, community history and underrepresented voices.

Its Wings Are Almost Free and Everything is Connected by Heritage Hub

“It has been fantastic to connect with others across Bradford’s heritage sector, from artists to archivists, through the Elevate programme. I’ve gained valuable insights into the creativity and dedication involved behind the scenes. I’m especially excited about our Heritage Open Day Show and Tell event, a South Asian-themed antiques roadshow where we’ll showcase artefacts, invite the community to share stories, and spark intergenerational conversations between elders and young people."
“The Elevate programme as a part of Bradford 2025 has been an amazing opportunity to grow my knowledge of the heritage sector. There have been some really engaging and thought-provoking sessions, and there will be a palpable effect on the heritage sector in Bradford for many years to come! The programme has really encouraged me to get involved with the Heritage Open Days at Bradford Unitarian Church, and I have unearthed lots of interesting information about this fascinating congregation which dates back to the seventeenth century. Visitors to the modern airy building on Russell Street at the Heritage Open Days in September will be pleasantly surprised by the deep roots of a group of religious rebels!”
“Bradford’s story has always been shaped by the people who call it home and that’s exactly what the Elevate programme is about. We’re proud to be skilling up a new generation of heritage leaders who are rooted in their communities, passionate about Bradford’s past, and dedicated to its future.

These events show that heritage isn't just about history, they show how we can create space for people's lived experiences and new ways of understanding who we are. The Elevate programme is a reflection of the district at its best: diverse, bold, and led by local voices. This is what Bradford 2025 is all about — investing in lasting change that puts culture and community at the heart of our future.”
“Bradford is a city with an incredibly rich heritage that has already been well-demonstrated through the Bradford 2025 programme. Thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, we’re delighted to support the Elevate programme. This programme is nurturing 11 groups to ensure that this incredible heritage continues to be celebrated after Bradford 2025 ends. It’s also wonderful to see that the cohort have put together a diverse and vibrant programme for this year’s Heritage Open Days that represents Bradford so well.”
