Join us on stage for RISE

Application deadline: 13 Oct 2024

An opportunity to be part of something magical – RISE will be the spectacular opening event for Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, and this is your chance to take part. Award-winning theatre director Kirsty Housley is creating the open-air production in collaboration with Bradford-born Steven Frayne, formerly known as Dynamo.

Find out more and apply below.

Celebrate a relationship that has inspired you - and be part of telling Bradford’s story

The Bradford 2025 opening event, RISE, showcases the community connections that nurture and raise Bradford’s children and young people.

We’re looking for young people to take centre stage, partnered alongside the inspiring teachers, youth workers, elders, chosen families, guardians or carers who support them.

You will be part of a large intergenerational cast live on stage. When combined with the final event’s lighting, sound and film, your presence will have a huge impact.

Excitingly, you’ll have the unique opportunity to be involved in aerial workshops to create some pre-recorded footage. This means working with trained aerial teachers and learning how to move while lifted in the air wearing a harness (harnesses can be adapted to work for a range of needs).

Experience something special together

We are looking for pairs made up of a young person and an adult who has positively impacted their life. No performance experience is necessary.

Young people (aged 12 to 18 years old) who are growing up in Bradford District. You should be open to meeting new people, performing as a team in front of a crowd and be ready to be part of Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture. You must be 12 years (or older) on 21 October 2024.

Adults and elders (over 18 years old) who are active in raising and supporting Bradford District’s young people. This could be mentors, parents, social workers, neighbours, grandparents, your chosen family, etc. You’re used to supporting behind the scenes, and you’re up for seizing this moment to take part and stand proud.

There may be opportunity for some people to take part as an individual.

How to apply

If you want to be there, please complete the relevant participation forms below by midnight Sunday 13 October 2024.

Young people aged 12-18 – you will need a parent, carer or guardian to help you submit an application form.

If you are applying as a pair (this must be one young person and one adult) you will need to submit two forms – one for each person in the pair.

We will let you know if you have been successful by Tuesday 15 October 2024.

You must be available for workshops, filming sessions, rehearsals and both performances.

Please read the FAQs below and get in touch with the Engagement Team at [email protected] if you need any more information. You can also speak to the team by calling 01274 053087.

When are the rehearsals and performances?

To apply for this opportunity, you must be available at all of these dates and times for dress rehearsals and performances.

Wed 8 Jan, 5.30 to 8pm – on site rehearsal
Thu 9 Jan, 4.30 to 8pm – dress rehearsal
Fri 10 Jan, 4.30 to 8pm – performance
Sat 11 Jan, 4.30 to 8pm – performance

There will also be a number of other important rehearsals and meetings – participants should attend as many of these as possible. The full rehearsal schedule is still to be confirmed, but key dates include:

Mon 21 Oct, 5.30 to 7.30pm – first meeting and information session with the creative team

Sat 9 and Sun 10 Nov (time TBC) – workshop and filming sessions

Fri 22, Sat 23, and Sun 24 Nov (time TBC) – workshop and filming sessions

w/c 2 Dec (date and time TBC) – evening rehearsal

w/c 9 Dec (date and time TBC) – evening rehearsal

What if I can’t do all the dates?

You must be able to come to the workshop and filming sessions, as many rehearsals as possible, the dress rehearsal and both performance dates. If you can’t make all these, unfortunately, there won’t be enough time to get you ready to be safe and at your best for the final event.

Will I be paid?

This is a voluntary opportunity. We can pay for travel to and from the on-site and dress rehearsals and both performances from within the Bradford District, and we will provide refreshments at each session. We can also cover access support costs.

How will you choose participants?

We are looking for a balance of younger and older performers with a mix of backgrounds, gender identities and life experience. The cast will reflect the people of Bradford. We are interested in your personal connection to the themes, why you have chosen to apply in this pair, and why pairing up with each other is so important. Please don’t be shy and tell us about your story. A limited number of pairs will be selected for this, but there will be many other opportunities to take part in Bradford 2025 throughout the year.

Can I bring friends and family with me?

If you know people who want to take part, encourage them to apply for themselves. We need separate applications from everyone so we have all the correct information. See below if you are under 18. The performance is public and free, so all your fans can come and watch you!

How do I apply if I am under 18? / How do I support someone aged under 18 to apply?

We ask that only people aged over 18 complete our application forms. This should be the adult in the pair, applying for themselves and a legal guardian for the young person in the pair. The young person can help fill in the form, but it must be sent by their legal guardian. We will have chaperones and appropriate safeguarding measures in place at all sessions, rehearsals and performances.

What if I want to apply but don’t have someone to pair with?

If you are keen to be part of RISE but don’t have someone to pair with, you can apply as an individual. We may have space for individuals to participate with us, so please complete an adult or a young person sign-up form so we can consider you in our selection process.

If you want to participate with Bradford 2025 but don’t feel like this project is the right fit for you, you can sign up to participate with us here. If you want to get involved with Bradford 2025 more widely, volunteering might be the right fit for you. Find out more here. What age ranges can apply?

We want a big age range on this project, and we’d like a clear generational difference between the older and younger cast members. We would like young people involved in this project to be aged 12 years or older.

What will happen with the film afterwards?

We will be recording footage of rehearsals and performances, which will be shared by Bradford 2025 and our partners on social media and websites. The film made for the performance may also be used in the future. This project is high-profile, so please note that we will need photo and video consent.

What will I be wearing?

You will wear something from your own wardrobe that’s simple, comfortable and represents you. You’ll be given a steer on colour and type from the costume team, but the key is to be warm and relaxed. You will not need to spend any of your own money buying new clothes for this performance; we’ll work with what you have!
