A communal reading of House of Bilquis Bibi led by writer Sudha Bhuchar, exploring how patriarchal norms shape women’s lives - part of the University of Bradford’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

Inspired by Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba, Sudha Bhuchar’s adaptation is set in a close-knit community in Pakistan and explores how patriarchal norms shape the emotional and physical worlds of five sisters. Through conversations, humour, conflict and moments of resistance, the play reflects on the pressures placed on women around honour, autonomy and desire, revealing gender-based harm as part of wider social and structural contexts.

For this event, Sudha Bhuchar will guide participants through selected excerpts, creating space for shared reading, reflection and collective dialogue. No preparation or performance experience is required; reader packs will be provided on the day.

Sudha Bhuchar is Artist-in-Residence at Theatre in the Mill, co-commissioned by Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture.
