Hidden in Plain Sight – Full Day CPD for Educators

You inspired your learners by unlocking the heritage on your doorstep with a full day CPD.

This was a full-day CPD aimed at educators working with learners from Early Years to Key Stage 2, including those working in SEND settings and Alternative Provision.

In this session, you discovered the rich history and natural environment surrounding your school and how to turn it into meaningful learning experiences.

We explored what is worth knowing in your immediate local area and learnt how to design and deliver a bespoke heritage trail for your learners. You then left the session with curriculum-aligned guidance, some ready-to-use indoor and outdoor learning activities, and practical resources to take back to your setting.

Schedule

Morning Focus: The Built Environment
In the morning, we explored how to use your local built environment to spark curiosity and deepen historical understanding. This included:

  • Identifying buildings and local sites of historical interest near you
  • Using everyday features such as street furniture to create enquiries exploring change over time
  • Designed a heritage trail tailored to your location
  • Accessed a range of free resources to support your planning and teaching

Afternoon Focus: The Natural Environment
In the afternoon, we sought inspiration outdoors and you learnt how we to connect with our local natural heritage. In this participatory session we:

  • Practiced map making
  • Explored the local environment
  • Engaged with nature through creative outdoor activities that you can safely deliver with your learners
