Welcome to the Built by Sound experience at Loading Bay. This is an old building which has been refurbished to become an arts venue.

There is a long ramp at the entrance where you will be greeted by the venue staff.

Once you have entered the building, you will be greeted by a member of the Built by Sound Team. They will check your ticket and explain how the experience will work. At this point you will be offered any additional support you might need, for example if you would like captions in headset, to connect to the hearing loop system or a seat during the experience.

They will then take you to Built By Sound. You will see the theatre door and to the right is a corridor.

Follow the sign for the Lift which will take you to the basement where the experience is.

Once in the lift, you want to go down to the Basement. The button in the lift has the B lit up in blue.

You are now at the basement. When the lift opens, you will see a pair of doors which are a pinky purple colour with a hand across them. Here the XR Host will meet you and explain the experience. There is seating and accessible toilet available here.

Once you go through the door, you will see a map of the experience on the left and the Built by Sound logo on the back wall.

There is a map showing where you will be going.

The whole experience takes about 40 minutes.

The XR Host will help you get ready.

You will be given a Mixed Reality (MR) headset to wear and headphones.

If the headset is not comfortable, they can be adjusted. They are not heavy. The XR Host will also show you how to change the volume.

If you have asked for captions, seating or use of the loop the XR Host will check this with you here.

Once we are ready, we will start the experience.

Every space within the experience is step free and is designed to allow users to get around with ease. If you need help at any time just raise your hand and the XR Host will help you. They may lightly tap you on the shoulder to get your attention.

You will be led through a door to the start of the experience.

Room 1.

This is the living room, it shows what a living room from the 1970s was like.

The room has physical living room objects in there – you will get to meet the family that lives in the space and see a snapshot of their lives.

Please be aware: to watch your step, there is a carpet and rug.

Room 2

In this space, you will see a photographer, a large window behind him and you can see Bradford of the past.

There are wonderful photographs of Bradford’s South Asian communities over the years.

Room 3

In this space, we have 3 physical plinths which are on circular patterns. Be careful not to walk into them. Try exploring them by going into the patterns, this will start a clip with sound.

The clips relate to different buildings in Bradfford.

There is a scene change and in this space, you will see a bus drive around, it may surprise you at first. The mood becomes menacing

There are photos on the wall of the room.

Please be aware: There is visual and audio content about the National Front, racist and violent behaviour.

Room 4

In this space, you will experience music and interact with VR musical instruments.

This will then become a full VR daytimers club scene. There is a bass transducer which will feed beat through the space and you will feel this in your body.

There are photos on the wall of the room.

There are lights moving and some flashing images.

Please be aware: if you are finding the space overwhelming, let the XR Host know by raising your hand. They can turn down the music on your headset or even take you to a quiet space.

Each room will have something that happens through the headsets.

Take your time to look around. Some things may surprise you especially if it is your first time using a MR Headset.

When the experience finishes, please hand the headset back to the Host, and explore the final area.

Now the experience has finished, we hope you enjoyed yourself.

Please use the lift to return to the entrance area.

Important

There is a one quiet space which is designed to allow people to take a break.

Due to the nature of the experience, once you take a break and return, you will join the experience at the point of the journey the other members are up to.
