About this project

Bradford theatre producers Meg Wilson and Jazmine Franks, directors of Northern Duck Productions, explore Bradford’s canal-life history through a new play, set aboard canal boats in Bingley and Saltaire. Inspired by Meg’s ancestor, Rose Illingworth, the narrative explores Rose’s struggle between tradition and modernity, whilst shedding light on Bradford’s industrial past.

About the show

Growing up on her family’s canal boat, Rose Illingworth has always found freedom on the water. But as her 18th birthday nears, she faces a life-changing choice: stay aboard or step ashore to marry a kind boy with deep roots on land. Torn between loyalty and the unknown, Rose must navigate love, identity, and independence in this poignant coming-of-age tale, where every choice sends ripples through her future.

The show takes place on Kennet, an original Leeds & Liverpool short boat. Audience members will step up onto the boat and descend a few steps into the hold, where the performance unfolds.

Performances take place at various times and locations between Sat 3 May and Sun 18 May.
