History, remixed: take an immersive trip through British South Asian youth culture in the ’70s and ’80s.

Built by Sound is a mixed-reality experience exploring how British South Asian communities in the 1970s and ’80s found joy in defiance, in community and in music – from the thump of dhol drums in community halls to pirate radio buzzing through bedroom walls.

Created by No Ghost and Dialled In with Bradford 2025, this immersive experience uses archival footage, personal testimonies and a stirring  soundtrack to recreate a momentous era for South Asian communities in the UK – and particularly in Bradford. It takes us back to a time when young South Asians carved out new space in society, soundtracked their resistance against oppression, and stood up to the fascist rhetoric of the National Front – not in silence but in celebration.

Scripted by Nikesh Shukla and directed by Shehani Fernando, Built by Sound is a tribute to the power of collective memory as a force against racism and erasure. For anyone who’s ever felt unheard – and turned the volume up anyway. Whether you lived it, or it’s the first time you’re hearing it – this is your invitation in. A story of resistance through rhythm, told in a way that feels close, urgent, and alive. Come for the bass. Stay for the truth.

Using a Cochlear Implant at this event

If the headset is uncomfortable against your Cochlear Implant – let us know.

A member of our staff can help you adjust the headset for a more comfortable fit. Simply ask for assistance.

Using Accessories with Your Cochlear Implant

If you have an accessory, such as a Mini Mic or Mini Mic 2+, that you’d like to use with the headset, our staff can help you connect it.

However, you will be responsible for setting up and operating your accessory. For example, if you bring a phone clip that connects with a 3.5mm audio cable, our staff can assist with plugging it in, but you will need to handle the rest of the accessory’s setup.

Hearing Loop available

There are 6 Hearing Loop devices available. If you wish to use one, let us know.

The loop setup has been thoroughly tested by our Access Consultant who is a Hearing Aid and Cochlear Implant user. He is profoundly Deaf.

Please note: turning on the t-loop function on your hearing aid or cochlear implant is your responsibility. If you are not sure how to do this, contact your Audiology Centre for advice or check the manufacturer’s website.

If the loop does not work for you, you are welcome to try using the headphones or the headset speakers. How much you will hear will depend on the following:

  • The level and type of deafness you have.
  • Every hearing aid is set up differently and can work differently.
