Bhaji on the Beach

Gurinder Chadha, 1993

Gurinder Chadha and Meera Syal’s funny, frank and touching comedy.

A group of British Asian women from Birmingham take an unforgettable day trip to Blackpool in Gurinder Chadha’s groundbreaking comedy-drama, written by Meera Syal.

A day trip to Blackpool to see the lights – a harmless break from the routine for a minibus full of women from the Asian Women’s Centre. It all seems innocent enough, but as the bus trundles along to a Punjabi rendition of Cliff Richard’s ‘Summer Holiday’, problems quickly become apparent…

Warm and charming while sacrificing neither its integrity nor its point of view, it covers considerable personal and political territory… And it never forgets to have fun.”
