Back in the Pink Cinema Special

Castles in the Sky Projects

We stepped back in time to enjoy recreations of screenings from the 80s.

A programme of films that recreated and reimagined screenings organised by gay and lesbian collectives in the 1980’s.

We celebrated the role of film and cinema in community organising and gathering with a programme that reflects past programmes arranged in Bradford by Bradford Lesbian Line and Bradford Gay Switchboard. At the centre of our programme was the feature length documentary Before Stonewall which was screened by Bradford Lesbian Line at Bradford Film Theatre (AKA Bradford Playhouse) in 1988 to raise funds and awareness for the campaign against Section 28.

Before Stonewall (1984) is essential viewing and a landmark documentary showcasing the presence and activism of the LGBTQ+ community in the USA before the Stonewall uprising. The film was an catalyst for international solidarity and awareness raising and remains as important now as when it was created.

About the Back in the Pink Weekender

Back in the Pink, Bradford 2025’s series dedicated to the rich and radical history of LGBTQ+ life in the city, continued with a weekend-long celebration of gay life – past, present and future.

We travelled back in time to explore the activism, community and culture of Bradford’s LGBTQ+ communities in the late 20th century. Connected with today’s LGBTQ+ community at workshops, discussions and a Saturday-night party. And considered how together, we can preserve our own communities’ histories for generations to come.
